First Lutheran Foundation About Us Our Programs How to Give Contact Us

FAQ

Can donors designate how their contributions will be used?

Yes. Donors can either designate their gifts to any of the programs supported by the Foundation or give contributions which allow the Foundation to direct gifts to where the need is greatest.

Are gifts to First Lutheran Foundation tax-deductible?

Generally yes for both federal and state purposes, but donors are encouraged to consult with legal and financial advisors.

How are gifts to the First Lutheran Foundation different from gifts to
First Lutheran Church?

Gifts to the congregation tend to be immediately used for the ongoing, day-to-day ministry of the church. Gifts given to the Foundation should always be over and above our regular financial support of the church. However, the Foundation gives donors the unique opportunity to give a gift that is retained such that only interest earnings are spent. This means your gift will continue to give and support ministry in perpetuity.

Can we get financial advice through the First Lutheran Foundation?

Yes. The Foundation has engaged Gift Planning Services (GPS) of Altoona, Wisconsin, to provide free, confidential consultations for prospective donors. GPS sells no financial products. They have been secured by the Foundation to assist you with your estate planning, so you can provide for your family, maximize your charitable gifts, and avoid unnecessary taxes. Contact GPS.

Who manages the fund of the First Lutheran Foundation?

Invested funds are managed by professional money managers who direct the investments in accordance with policies provided by the Foundation board. Financial performance is reviewed monthly by the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.

Who determines how the funds will
be allocated?

The First Lutheran Foundation Board of Directors. Because the Foundation seeks to support and supplement the ministry of the congregation, the board is in continual conversation with the Congregation Council of First Lutheran Church.

What are the current needs of the First Lutheran Foundation?

The board currently has approximately $150,000 available for annual allocations. Recently adopted objectives call for continued support of ministry in senior housing, parish nursing, elderly transportation, and Bible Camp programs; and significant increases in scholarships, foreign mission, and church property capital improvements. To fund these new initiatives, the fund balances of the Foundation need to grow approximately $1.5 million. This growth would provide annual allocations of about $220,000, an amount that would support all of the Foundation’s current goals.

Can property be donated to the First Lutheran Foundation?

Yes, but it would be wise to consult with the Foundation board to make sure your gift can be utilized within the mission and objectives of the Foundation.

How are the ministries and programs of the First Lutheran Foundation identified?

While the Foundation board oversees where fund earnings are directed , the Foundation regularly consults with the Congregation Council and pastors of the congregation. In addition, suggestions from congregational members are always welcome.
